I was a bit confused about this at first, but basically Khao Sok is a National Park, and Cheow Lan Lake is a lake located inside the National Park. It’s located in the southern peninsula of Thailand, a few hours drive north of Phuket in the Surat Thani Province (Surat Thani is also the closest airport).

Khao Sok Lake is locally known as Cheow Larn Lake (occasionally spelt Cheow Lan Lake – without the ‘r’). It is a stunning place to visit, lying in an ancient rainforest, and is the location of some of the most unique accommodation in Khao Sok including floating hotels.

The lake is vast, and is dotted with over one hundred limestone karsts which jut up from the still water, remnants of what were once mountain peaks. Being one of the less touristy places in Thailand, Khao Sok’s Cheow Lan lake provided a perfect change of pace and scenery from the busy beaches in Krabi and the islands. At the end of the day, spending a weekend on a lake is one of the more unique things to do in Thailand.

It was made by the flooding of a large valley in 1982 for the hydro-electric power station.
